Every phone call your team makes generates data that disappears into a notes field nobody reads.

Aircall just acquired Piper AI, an "agentic" sales automation company. The short version: Aircall is moving beyond being a business phone system into territory where AI handles follow-ups, logs activity across channels, and tries to run pieces of the revenue process without a human touching it. They're betting that the gap between a conversation happening and a next step actually getting done is where deals die — and they're not wrong about that.

Here's what this means if you're the person who owns a CRM that your team half-uses: vendors are racing to bolt AI onto platforms that were already complicated. That sounds like progress. In practice, it usually means more features sitting on top of a foundation that still doesn't match how your business actually works. You'll get automated follow-ups firing at the wrong time, into the wrong workflow, with no easy way to adjust it yourself.

The pattern is familiar. A platform adds capability, the sales deck looks impressive, and six months later you're explaining to your boss why the automations are creating more cleanup work than they're saving.

Buying more automation on top of a broken process is still a broken process — just a faster one.
